A book comprising an essay by historian and professor Ana Simões, and 128-page-long comic by me, made as a companion to the exhibition E3 – Einstein, Eddington, Eclipse at the National Museum of Natural History (MUHNAC) and the library of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the NOVA University of Lisbon (PT).

The comic takes Arthur Eddington’s correspondence exchanged with his mother, sister, and the Lisbon Observatory before, during and after his expedition to the Island of Príncipe to study the total solar eclipse of 1919, as a starting point for an graphic narrative of experimental and impressionistic contours. Focusing on the web of diverse human and non-human actors involved—known and unknown people, animals, plants, environmental and affective factors—the comic, which also compiles some documents from the exhibition, establishes an intertextual relationship with the essay on the scientific, political, and social implications of this voyage whose results confirmed Einstein’s revolutionary theory of relativity. The travel “impressions” take on a double meaning, referring to Eddington’s account in words (reimaged as yellow stickies) and the material marks of the places he visited, present in the paint and glitches on the pages.

The essay and the comic are bilingual, in Portuguese and English, the two main languages used during the expedition.

Um livro composto por um ensaio da historiadora e professora Ana Simões e uma novela gráfica de 128 páginas por mim, concebido como complemento à exposição E3 - Einstein, Eddington, Eclipse no Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC) e na biblioteca da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT/UNL).

A BD toma a correspondência de Arthur Eddington trocada com sua mãe, irmã e o Observatório de Lisboa antes, durante e após a sua expedição à Ilha do Príncipe para estudar o eclipse solar total de 1919, como ponto de partida para uma narrativa gráfica de contornos experimentais e impressionistas. Focando-se na teia dos diversos actores humanos e não-humanos envolvidos – pessoas conhecidas e desconhecidas, animais, plantas, factores ambientais e afetivos – a BD, que também compila alguns documentos da exposição, estabelece uma relação intertextual com o ensaio teórico sobre as implicações científicas, políticas e sociais dessa viagem cujos resultados confirmaram a revolucionária teoria da relatividade de Einstein. As “impressões” da viagem assumem um duplo significado, referindo-se tanto ao relato de Eddington por palavras (re-imaginadas como post-its amarelos) como às marcas materiais dos lugares visitados, presentes na tinta e glitches nas páginas.

O ensaio e a BD são bilingues, em Português e Inglês, as duas principais línguas usadas durante a expedição.
